Shambhala Prison Meditation Project with Awake in Action The Shambhala Meditation Centre of Vancouver is pleased to announce the launch of its Prison Dharma Project through the efforts of the Awake in Action Committee. Visits began January 27th, 2008 and will continue every Sunday morning at the Aloutte Women?s Correctional Facility.
Aloutte is a medium security provincial prison in Maple Ridge with more than 140 women incarcerated. Sitting and walking meditation have been taught and well received. In the first two weeks more than two dozen women have participated. The teachings will be non-denominational with support for meditation practice from any spiritual approach.
Ten volunteers currently make this project possible. More than 80 books on Buddhism, meditation, and yoga were donated to the prison by community members. None are in the prison library anymore, so the women are obviously borrowing them!
The next phase at Aloutte is finding meditation cushions. Once service at Aloutte is established and more people become involved, other correctional facilities in the Fraser Valley will be approached. Donations of books and cushions would be appreciated to support the expansion of this project.
